AKRON, Ohio The Thera-Band Academy has awarded the $5,000 2005 Thera-Band/Vladimir Janda Grant for Therapeutic Exercise Research to Daniel Herman,
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, to identify the role of strength training as a specific aspect of ACL injury prevention protocols in the female recreational athlete.
"Female athletes have higher rates of ACL injuries than male athletes due to neuromuscular differences in their knee stabilization," said Phil Page, PT, ATC, manager of clinical education and research for The Hygenic Corporation. "We awarded the grant to determine if an exercise program using Thera-Band products can help prevent these injuries."
The Influence of Strength Training on the Neuromuscular Characteristics of a Stop-Jump Task will examine a training protocol for strengthening the knee, hip and trunk to positively alter the joint forces, positions and muscle activation during dynamic athletic tasks.
Herman's proposal was chosen from several applicants because it met the research objectives of the Thera-Band Research Advisory Committee, specifically injury prevention.
"The strength training protocol is designed to be easily implemented in the field, thus promoting cost effectiveness and injury prevention," said Herman, an MD/PhD student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research will be concluded by summer 2006, and will be posted online at www.Thera-BandAcademy.com.
The Academy is currently accepting applications for the 2006 Thera-Band/Vladimir Janda grant, Thera-Band Outstanding Student Research Project award, and The Most Creative Use Contest.
The $5,000 Thera-Band/Vladimir Janda grant is offered annually to encourage clinical research that substantiates the efficacy of exercise in fitness and rehabilitation. The Thera-Band Outstanding Student Research Project award is a $500 award given for an outstanding research project in the area of exercise and rehabilitation. The Most Creative Use Contest awards $500 to an individual who submits the most creative use of Thera-Band products. Applications are available on the Thera-Band Academy Web site, www.Thera-BandAcademy.com/research/rs_janda_grant.asp, or by calling The Hygenic Corporation at 800-321-2135.
